The University of Valencia, established in
1502, boasts a long academic tradition, originally centered on the disciplines of medicine, humanities, theology, and law. Now it has a wide range of degree courses in basic sciences and experimental sciences, engineering, health sciences, humanities, education, and social, economic, and legal sciences. Most of the courses are conducted in Catalan.
The university functions on three principal campuses: Blasco Ibáñez and Tarongers campus, in the city center of Valencia, and the Burjassot-Paterna campus, in the northwest. It also has classes held in Ontinyent and Gandia, both places within the Valencian Community in the south of the city.
With 18 faculties and schools and 19 interdisciplinary research institutes, the University of Valencia offers more than 50 bachelor’s degrees, 110 master’s degrees, and 60 doctorates. The university is specially renowned for its Science Park, with over 80 start-up companies and six research centers, including the Astronomical Observatory. It also contains a historic botanical garden, established in 1567, which was originally maintained for growing medicinal plants for the medical school. It has developed over time into a research center for plant diversity and conservation.
