About the National Autonomous University of Mexico
General information and contact details for the National Autonomous University of Mexico
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (NAUM) has the distinction of being the largest university in Latin America. It was initially the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico and was created in 1910 by Justo Sierra, who was the education minister at the time, with the aim of building a Mexican university based on liberal principles.
It became independent of government control in 1929, allowing it more freedom to run its curriculum and finance.
Now, NAUM not only provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees but also runs a number of high schools around Mexico City, qualifying students to pursue university studies.

The principal campus, which was built by the best architects in Mexico, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The university also has other campuses across Mexico and has an international presence in Texas, Illinois, and Quebec.
Although classes are taught mostly in Spanish, degrees offer an intensive five-week course in Spanish for international students to enhance their language proficiency.
NAUM boasts associations with three Nobel Laureates in Peace, Literature, and Chemistry. Its alumni network includes five Mexican presidents, along with many distinguished journalists, philosophers, and politicians.
The university takes pride in its research excellence, hosting multiple research centers—such as the Centre for Applied Sciences and Technological Development—that focus on applying scientific knowledge to real-world challenges. NAUM also specializes in research addressing issues critical to Mexico and the developing world.
